Ministry of Youth and Sports was established in 1984. Before that sports sector was dealt with in the Ministry of Sports and Culture while the youth sector was looked after by the Ministry of Labour and Manpower. After its creation, the Ministry of Youth and Sports has been dispensing its services for the development of the youth section of the population. At the same time, it looks after the upliftment of games and sports in the country. Following are the major activities of the Ministry. All matter relating to youth-their welfare, training and prospects. Organization and mobilization of the youths for voluntary participation in the development activities of the country. Co-ordination of youth services liaison with concern ministries/ divisions. Administration of grants-in-aid under specific projects. Youth awards. Programmes to encourage a sense of adventure, responsibility ,confidence and achievement in youths. Research and study on youths and youth development activities. Promoting activities for creating employment opportunities for the unemployed and under employed youths. Promotion aid development of games and sports. National sports awards. Aid from foreign and international body in the field of sports. Grants-in-aid to sport organisations. International Organisations and other international programmes in the field of sports. Pride of performance; merit awards in sports. Organisation and participation in national and international games and athletics. Development publication in the field of sports. National bodies relating to sports. Exchange of sports team with foreign countries. Pension to sports men. Secretariat administration including financial matters. Administration and control of subordinate offices and organisations under this Ministry. Liaison with International Organisations and matters relating to treaties and agreements with other countries and world bodies relating to subjects allotted to this Ministry. All laws on subjects allotted to this Ministry. Inquiries and statistics on any of the subject allotted to this Ministry. Fees in respect of any of the subject allotted to this Ministry except fees taken in courts.
